Haydon Roberts Marks Reading Debut with Goal in Barnsley Draw

Haydon Roberts made an immediate impact on his Reading debut, finding the net in an entertaining 2-2 draw against Barnsley.

Having joined the club from Bristol City earlier in the week, the left-back wasted no time in announcing himself, arriving at the back post to convert Paddy Lane’s cross and open the scoring.

Despite a strong overall performance from Reading, a late equaliser from Jack Marriott meant the points were shared.

Reflecting on his debut, Roberts expressed both pride in his contribution and a desire for more.

While pleased to get on the scoresheet, he admitted the result was bittersweet, with the team showing dominant spells both in and out of possession. He highlighted areas to improve defensively but remained confident those moments will be addressed moving forward.

Roberts also emphasised how well he fits into the manager’s playing style, believing it will help bring out the best in his game. Still building match fitness, he is confident that with more minutes and training, his performances will continue to improve.

The defender revealed that his goal was no coincidence, pointing to work done on the training ground—particularly attacking the back post—as something he was pleased to execute in a match scenario.

He also praised his new teammates for making the transition seamless, adding that he is already feeling settled and looking forward to the next opportunity to contribute.
