Manchester United’s Under-18s suffered heartbreak in the U18 Premier League Cup final, narrowly losing 6-5 on penalties to Crystal Palace after a dramatic 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park.
Despite the result, it was another composed and impressive performance from goalkeeper Cameron Byrne-Hughes, who played a key role throughout the contest and produced important saves to keep United in the fight deep into extra time.
United looked in control for large periods after Noah Ajayi opened the scoring midway through the first half following a sharp attacking move. Palace pushed for a response, but Byrne-Hughes and the United defence stood firm under increasing pressure.
The game turned late on when Palace were awarded a penalty in stoppage time, allowing Benji Casey to level the score and force extra time. Byrne-Hughes then produced another strong stop in the additional period, with Palace striking the crossbar from the rebound as United continued to battle.
With the final heading to penalties, United made a late goalkeeping change specifically for the shootout. After an intense series of spot-kicks, Crystal Palace eventually edged victory to lift the trophy.
Although the result ended in disappointment, the final marked another important step in the development of Byrne-Hughes, whose calm distribution, command of the box and big-match mentality were evident on one of the academy stage’s biggest nights.
